Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was mainly to tend to his herd of rams.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales through the single tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day upon day, looking out for his here wards imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.
Narratives of wolves preying on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but found no beast.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
